Standing water in a house is an emergency, and every hour it sits in carpet, padding and drywall makes the repair bigger. The emergency line is open 24/7, including nights and weekends. While you wait, close the shutoff valve at the fixture or the main water valve, lift small items off the floor and keep everyone away from any outlet or appliance the water has touched.

This page explains how water extraction works, which situations call for action right away, and what is different about a burst pipe. If your problem is slower, such as a ceiling stain that keeps growing, the water damage repair page may be a better match.

When standing water is an emergency

Any water you can see on the floor has already reached the padding under it. Water that is spreading under a wall, dripping from a ceiling light fixture, running toward an electrical panel or coming up from a drain should be treated as urgent. So should anything that has been wet for more than a day, because that is when materials begin to fail and mold becomes a risk.

Calling at 2 a.m. is normal. Crews answer after-hours calls because pipes do not fail on a schedule, and same-day response is offered when it is available. Do not wait until morning to see whether the water stops by itself.

How water extraction works

Extraction starts with the biggest volume. Submersible pumps clear deep water, and truck-mounted or portable extraction units pull water out of carpet and padding. A weighted extraction wand presses down on carpet so water comes up instead of staying in the backing.

After the standing water is gone, the crew uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to find water that moved into walls, under baseboards and along the subfloor. Wet padding is usually removed because it holds water and dries slowly. The structure is then handed to the drying stage, which is covered on the water mitigation page.

Burst pipe water damage

Burst pipes are the classic middle-of-the-night call. Braided supply lines, compression fittings and old shutoff valves are common failure points under sinks and behind toilets, and a split can release a lot of water in a short time. The first job is closing the valve. Look under the fixture for a small oval or round handle, and turn it clockwise. If it will not move, close the main valve for the house.

In San Pedro the water utility is the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. If the valve at the house will not close, ask LADWP how to shut off water at the meter. Once the flow stops, move belongings out of the wet area, take photos for your insurer and call the line so extraction can begin.

A burst pipe inside a wall is harder because you may only see a stain or a damp baseboard. A wall that feels cool and soft, a sound of running water with all fixtures off, or a sudden jump in the water bill are reasons to call before the drywall fails.

Safety first when water is near power or sewage

Do this before you call us

If water is touching an outlet, a panel, a major appliance or a light fixture, do not step into it. Turn off power at the panel only if you can reach it while standing on dry ground. If you cannot do that safely, call the utility or 911 and wait outside.

If water is coming from a toilet, tub or floor drain, treat it as sewage. Keep children and pets away, do not use fans to push the smell around, and do not try to clean it up yourself. The crew handles contaminated water with different steps, described on the flood damage restoration page.

What comes after the water is out

Extraction is the first stage, not the last. Once the water is out, the building still holds moisture in framing, subfloor and drywall. The crew sets air movers and dehumidifiers, takes daily readings and removes anything that cannot dry. Ruined finishes are cleaned out under water damage cleanup, and rebuilding follows when the readings say the structure is dry.

Hillside homes in Rancho Palos Verdes and flat-lot homes near the harbor face the same first steps, even though the plumbing layouts differ. The line answers the same way wherever the water is.

What shapes the price of water removal

What followsDrying days and repair scopeExtraction is priced apart from the drying that follows.

Sudden and accidental water damage is often covered by homeowners insurance, while slow leaks and flood damage often are not. Check your policy or ask your insurer, and photograph everything before it is moved. The crew can provide moisture records and a written scope for your claim, but no company can promise approval.

Questions about emergency water removal

Do you handle emergency water removal at night or on weekends in San Pedro?

Yes. The emergency line is answered 24/7, including holidays. Same-day response is offered when available, and the person on the line will give you safety steps while the crew is on the way.

Should I turn off the electricity before calling?

Only if you can reach the panel while standing on dry ground and nothing near you is wet. If water is touching outlets or appliances, stay out, call the utility or 911, then call us.

Can wet carpet be saved after extraction?

Sometimes. Carpet that stayed wet for a short time with clean water can often be dried in place, while padding is usually replaced. Contaminated water or several days of soaking usually means the carpet goes too.

Who do I call if the water is coming from the street or the meter?

Call LADWP about the supply on the street side of the meter, and call us for the water inside the building. If you are not sure which side the problem is on, call us and describe what you see.

Is a wet ceiling the same as standing water?

Not exactly. A dripping ceiling often means water is trapped above it and needs release and drying. Mention the ceiling when you call so the crew brings the right tools.
